Guest post by Santosh Shukla, InsideView Hyderabad office.
Posting on Twitter, updating a Facebook profile, putting that Youtube video demo and uploading pictures to Flickr may be free of cost, but it’s wrong to think that social media for marketing and sales is free.
Social media are now standard tools of the Sales 2.0 workplace. But if you are like me, the “social” part of social media sometimes gets in the way of the work. That means you inadvertently spend some time to look at the tweets of people you follow, retweet some and end up spending much more time than you intended. Similar things happen when you go to LinkedIn to find a connection, and end up reading and joining irrelevant discussions.
Thus, a result-oriented foray into social media turns out to be a long walk into unknown (but interesting) woods and by the time we realize, the damage is already done. Time is money, and you’ve just wasted a pile of it.
Here some tips that I use to get the most out of social media while staying focused:
- Link your Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook accounts to save the time and effort of updating same status/message at different places.
LinkedIn with Twitter: https://www.linkedin.com/secure/settings?twitterSettings
Facebook with Twitter: http://www.facebook.com/twitter/
- Create lists on Twitter to follow tweets on related topics like Sales2.0, Golf, psychology etc. to be focused on reading only what you want to read at that moment.
http://help.twitter.com/entries/76460-how-to-use-twitter-lists
To follow the tweets of the IV 20 Top Sales Industry social media users here – http://twitter.com/skshukla/Sales2-0
- Use intelligent tools that allow you to focus on the crux and not deviate by being in your work window. SalesView helps you to read relevant blogs, tweets of the prospect that you are targeting within your CRM so you don’t have to leave it to get the social media benefits. It also finds the LinkedIn connections and Facebook friend connections for prospect accounts within your CRM.
- Follow top 20 Sales Industry Social Media Users and some more stars to get the latest and greatest information and views of the Sales (and Marketing) industry without spending too much time elsewhere.
- Talk to people who have pioneered in linking social web and enterprise, the creators of term “socialprise”.
I am sure you have some more tips that you use to efficiently use your time on social media and get the desired results. Please feel free to share them.

Very nice post.
I couldn’t agree more about the small foray turning to a long walk in the unknown woods. I myself have felt that many a times.
I am going to use the tips mentioned by you right away. Social Media resembles world wide web, lots of relevant pieces of information hidden between pile of data. Good to know SalesView helps removing the chaff.

It is really great to have all the social network sites available on a single screen or tool.Linking of Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook accounts to save the time and effort of updating same status/message at different places. There is an really appreciating feature i.e linkedIn connections and Facebook friend connections for prospect accounts within our CRM. Most of people who are attached to the market are having lack of time but this provides us facility to get the latest and greatest information and views of the Sales (and Marketing) industry without spending too much time elsewhere.

The internet has become an integral part of our daily life and social media particularly takes a huge chunk of the time spent on it. Today I come across people who are anywhere between addicts to compulsive visitors to occasional users of the big three – FB, Twitter & Linkedin. It is here to stay and the only way forward as Santosh suggests is judicious use of the media rather than complete ban at the workplace.
As has been demonstrated lately, social media has the power to challenge the status quo (FB & Iran elections), change power equations (Tharoor, Modi & IPL) and empower employees in getting peer recognition (Linkedin).
Great work, Santosh!

However, don’t you think if we become too focussed we might miss on the real essence of social media, that comes when we explore the unexplored territories?

Hi Reetu,
You have brought in an interesting perspective.
The only problem is to “find that needle in the stack.
I would say Pareto principle, the 80:20 rule rightly applies here. 80% of the relevant and actionable social media content is posted by 20% of the top Sales2.0 leaders.
By the way, if you are interested in getting the best of sales2.0 from social media, follow the twitter list: ” @skshukla/sales2-0

1 I agree with many of your points about Social Media. However I would like to quote Dave Stein here:
“Some major market segments are today very, very far away from regular and widespread use of social media between buyers and sellers. Industries such as industrial equipment, insurance, and some sub-sectors of health care have a long way to go. Attempt to come at them through social media and you’ll likely find no one at the other end of the tweet.”

Hi Santosh,
Wow! That was a really deep insight about some websites that some people can only imagine as a wastage of time.
I personally am not a very frequent user of these sites. All I do is to log in Facebook everyday (wait, did I say ‘everyday’?) and check on new messages that I have received, then check on some game status, and then maybe loiter around on a profile of somebody interesting, then maybe try to find out mutual friends…and maybe join groups with people who are equally weird as I am…. okay, I accept, I AM a very frequent user of Facebook!
So you see, you might be thinking that this blog in not very useful to you, as you don’t use these websites that much. But what you don’t realize is that if you are an internet user, you are already addicted to Social Media Websites and whenever a new website hits the market, you will jump to check it out.
I used to be registered in all kinds of social media websites, Facebook, Orkut, Twitter, Fropper, Flickr, Picasa, Yahho Answers etc etc etc. It became so confusing and to maintain all these websites that I ended up retiring from most of them. But now with Santosh’s blog, I think I can maintain my current accounts properly, keep my focus intact and at least reduce my unnecessary lingering a bit.
Again, Social Media websites are not just chatting and friendship websites anymore. Big organizations like HP, Apple, Microsoft, Sony etc are using these sites to track customer reviews, product qualities, defects etc. The day is not very far when Facebook and Twitter will be included by big organizations as official processes and logging in would be a job criteria.
So, thanks again to Santosh for this beautiful blog.

Hi,
Was good to read the information, but almost all the technologies have already got a worked around 4 d same.
Android – Gives u Timespace in which you get/update latest from all sites(or as per your linking preferences).
~Iphone n IPad provides applications for these.
But a question, with so much of social open-ness; this information is boon for the bad guys/hackers. What is the security of such information?

Posting a relevant constructive criticism to the post by David Bradley at Don’t waste your time on social media
The last thing you should do is to link your Twitter account to your Facebook and LinkedIn accounts as you suggest on your blog. Do you know how incredibly annoying it is to see the same message tweeted, updated and posted on profiles you follow on all three systems? More to the point, it might “save you time” but it actually just makes you look like a lazy twit who cannot be bothered to engage with people at a personal level.
My Reply:
Hi David,
Thanks for pointing that out. I agree with you there.
I would like to rephrase that you have the option of linking your twitter account to Facebook or LinkedIn when you really want to do so.
Publishing all the tweets to LinkedIn or Facebook may not be a good idea as David suggested.
To the new users, Twitters gives the option of sending only those tweets to linkedIn that have tag #in or #li . I have done exactly just that for my account. twitter.com/skshukla
Thanks again David for giving me an opportunity to clarify.

Wonderful article especially relevant in todays world when the amount of time being spent on social networking sites by employees during work hours is on the rise and quality time and effort which should have been directed towards work is being misdirected towards these sites.
Thank you for the tip on linking Facebook and Twitter sites.

I totally agree with ” a result-oriented foray into social media turns out to be a long walk into unknown (but interesting) woods” point of Santosh.
People tend to spend a lot of their precious time on Social media on internet thus leading to a loss of productivity to their respective employers.
Social media communication is the new revolutionary concept after the mobile technology and has become an integral part of our daily lives. This concept is here to stay and the only way forward is to make judicious use of this medium and not to spend too much unnecessary time on it.
The way suggested by Santosh is an excellent step towards reducing the wastage of uncecessary time spent on different sites. The integration of these sites by using intelligent tools would go a long way in achieving reduction of spent time on different accounts.
Thanks Santosh for this useful post!!!!!

A relevant article; I cannot agree more with its intent.
As an after thought, the purpose of this article is better understood when you realize that what you have been doing while reading it or commenting on it is, in a way, spending time doing what is now a popular catch-phrase, “social networking”. How much of it you were able to make use of is something that will decide your ROI!
In a world that is changing too fast and with the internet and telecommunication advancements coming together, you have access to information that is free (almost) and infinite (almost). In time, the internet will sneak its deserved place into our mobile phones (it has started already, you know it, with dedicated mobile applications for popular websites becoming common). Also, once Google’s open-source sister Android starts pushing things further, the points raised in the post above and the ‘ROI question’ will become increasingly pertinent. The fact is that things are changing faster than most of us would anticipate. It is called the impact of the improbable! So we’d do better if we try to adjust too.
Personally, I was fed up with having lame email ids that I made as an 18 year old. I guess this must be true of many people who were born in what the today’s teen generation would call as “boring 80s”. And so us boring boys would get utmost macho to come up with creepy sounding mail ids like debonairduderediffmail.com and the boring girls in sync with their misconception that they are ‘creative’ would have such mail id like ‘angel0284′ and ‘love.princess1185′. Many of us would end up with useless mail ids, which is nothing more than a colossal waste of time. I am sure that teenagers today are more aware of the ROI of the time they spend on the internet, though I am also sure they are wasting that saved time at even worse places!
Talking of linking of mail accounts and professional accounts and fb accounts, a keen observer would simply call it ‘optimization’. In fact, this could be applicable beyond social networking too. For instance, I have routed my internet provider’s account, my DTH television service provider’s account, my mobile transactions, and all my credit card payments by registering them as “billers” in my bank’s e-account. Thus, all my e-payments are single-window transactions and that is time saving (even if I waste it later trying to chase a random link that a friend put as his status update on fb!)
Finally, each of us is depended on staying connected, some more, some less. And each of us is very likely to be more dependent on the internet tomorrow than he or she is today. In keeping with our lifestyles, we can surely think of saving time in as many ways as possible. The more you are into the internet, the more important it is for you.
To add to what has been already said, “Time is money, and I want lots of it”

I’ve not directly faced the situation you outline, but in other similar ones I’ve found Facebook’s support very helpful – and they can do an awful lot that isn’t available to the rest of us via on screen options. Although Facebook’s tech support for private individuals is very variable, for companies with pages (i.e. those who they want to get spending advertising money with them) it’s been consistently pretty good in my experience.
May 10, 2010 at 8:33 pm

I could not agree more with this article, in fact a few months I started advising customers on the pros and cons of Facebook marketing because it was only a few months ago that my own account was compromised, I could not get in touch with FB as they don´t have phone support (which amazes me, being such a large company, I can manage to speak to my customers, the big boys always think they can change the rules of business!), so I was locked out for months while someone sent spam using my name and there was nothing I could do, I was refused access. Now, after all this FB have now decided that we were the spammers and blocked all content to our own websites, flagging us as phishing! During this down time we were unable to communicate with customers and friends, all our ads were down, fortunately for me, my partner was also an admin for all these groups so using his account I could gain access, this was a valid lesson learned, if it had just been me then we would have been well and truly buggered! This got me thinking that should my customers place their websites on FB, what if they get hacked? Social Media then turns everything upside down and you go from being a good business person who is well liked to having your business name being blacklisted on FB – I am very sceptical now indeed. FB should stay as a social network for friends and that be it, but this is now too late, they are already big enough but clearly do not take their security seriously, I have been on many social networks for years but FB is the one where spam keeps flooding in!

Social media conversation is essentially content, which does not generate revenue by itself. Social media can make some money using display ads or adsense. But if you are creating content, you are like a freelancer contributing to a newspaper or magazine. The only way you can make money is for the contribution, which social media is not going to give you. Seems to me the reason you spend time on social media is to communicate, not for any ROI.
May 10, 2010 at 9:00 pm
Rupesh
As a financial analyst, I’m quite amazed that ROI, a financial/banking term that is often used in our industry has been embraced and used so effectively in today’s web analytics.
You are quite correct is stating that investment is not limited to funds (as in cash or cash equivalents like marketable securities) but can also be in the form of time, concentrating on a certain web niche, or a blogger’s plan of action- ie majority of his post and its nature- making sure that there is a significant return on these investments is something that should be seriously considered. Otherwise, what’s the purpose of maintaining a blog or operating a website, when the cost outweighs the benefits?
ROI as we know it is= (Gain from Investment – Cost of Investment ) / Cost of Investment
Perhaps we can have some sort of formula to use as basis in the near future, that would be a very helpful tool for serious and fun bloggers/website owners.
May 10, 2010 at 9:06 pm
Poonam
Measuring the ROI for social networking can be a little difficult because the returns you’ll get out of networking via social media are not direct and immediate. Chatting with another person on Twitter does not always give you an immediate benefit: however, you are building a relationship which you can leverage in the future.

It has definitely been a large consumption of time (and hence money!) while keeping up with these social networing sites. Linking them is a good idea. I agree with u that ‘you inadvertently spend some time to look at the tweets of people you follow, retweet some and end up spending much more time than you intended.’ .
One side of the coin says that u get lot of information but other says it kills time. It is a tool where u need to judiciously use your time to get more info in lesser time otherwise u r gone for a toss.

How much time should an average salesperson be spending on social media? Is there a thumb rule to it?
May 12, 2010 at 8:04 pm
Santosh Shukla (author)
Rohit, you have raised a wonderful point. I think there’s no thumb rule to it. Each one needs to determine what amount of time is right for him/her to spend on social media.
I would say the equation of quantity solves only one part, the other important factor is: are you spending that time on the right things doing it the the right way?
Smart aggregation on information in your work environment by tools as Salesview.

What most Sales employees forget is that the people in the social media are humans too. They should be approached like a friend and once you start interacting, you are sure to get some attention. There is no use of creating a social networking profile and leaving it as it is and wasting others time.

Social media is fairly simple. Be yourself, interact and post often. The problem with all this is the sheer time it takes to be an active member.

Sharing your business on social media platforms is a must for anyone looking for exposure online. There is no better way to spread the benifits about your product or service than a satisfied customer . So in reality you can’t afford to “not” to be active in social media.

Hey Santosh,
These tips would surely would save sm time for ppl who use all these social networking sites. mostly the student community followed by the techies nd the cubicle workers..
From another techincal standpoint I think innovations like these would help minimize the need for storage by reducing redundancy.. nd hence data center optimization..
Its a good thought..
I ve had sm experience with streaming data mining. Let me see if i can implement a prototype in a week or two.. will share the results.
Thanks

It cost virtually no money to set up a Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter account. All sales agents should have at least one profiles up on these three accounts. Because the client must be searching for him!

The real problem while surfing social media is that there is too much chaff and too little grain. That’s the problem with user contributed unrestricted data.
In my opinion, internet’s next revolution would be to rank the good quality data higher than the rest.
